The Fairness Doctrine How We Lost it, and Why We Need it Back by Steve Rendall
The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows or editorials.

Kick The Oil Habit
Tell Big Oil to Support Renewable Fuels Like E85. More than five million American cars are already equipped to run on E85, a cheaper, cleaner, homegrown, renewable alternative to gasoline. Unfortunately, only about 600 of America's 170,000 gas stations currently offer this alternative fuel. Tell ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, Valero, and ConocoPhillips to double the number of E85 pumps over the next year and provide E85 at half of all gas stations within a decade.

Ask Congress to Make Our Voting Machines Secure! Come to Washington, D.C. on April 6 & 7 to Advocate for H.R. 550 and Voter Verified Paper Records!
H.R. 550, a bill introduced by Rep. Holt of New Jersey, would protect the integrity of our elections by requiring a voter verified paper record of every vote, requiring mandatory random hand counted audits to verify the accuracy of electronic tallies, and prohibiting the use of secret software and wireless communication devices in voting machines.

Tell the CW Network not to do Business with Right-wing Propagandists
The company we are concerned about is Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair is the company that pre-empted Nightline's episode that read the names of those killed in Iraq, that planned an hour-long propaganda attack on John Kerry two weeks before the 2004 election, and that continues to air right-wing commentary with no ideological balance.

IAVA's Honor the Fallen Campaign
More than 2000 American Troops have now been killed in Iraq, but for over two years, our newspapers have failed to adequately honor the sacrifice of America 's servicemembers. Putting the names of the fallen on page A14 is an insult to America 's Troops and to the families of the fallen, and is yet another example of poor media coverage of the war.

Wakeup Walmart
The truth is that Wal-Mart has let America down by lowering wages, forcing good paying American jobs overseas, and cutting costs with total disregard for the values that have made this nation great. Wal-Mart has needlessly exploited illegal immigrants, faces the largest gender discrimination lawsuit in history, forced workers to work in an unsafe environment, and -- incredibly -- broken child labor laws.

Stop News Fraud
"State-run media" is a phrase normally reserved for regimes such as North Korea that manipulate and censor all public information. Media in the United States were thought to be immune to such autocratic control, but recent maneuvers by the Bush administration should make Americans wonder how free our press actually is.

On April 18, Lowry Mays, chairman of radio giant Clear Channel, will receive the broadcast industry's "Distinguished Service Award." Distinguished service to whom? Not to you and other Americans. But Lowry isn't alone. He's one among many media kingpins who put their own political and business interests ahead of the public.
Now it's time for you to help free American media from the grip of these shameful men. You decide: who among them has done his utmost to make the media the abomination it is today? Vote for your worst below and on May 14 we will induct the "winner" into the Big Media Hall of Shame.

Physicians for Social Responsibility
What the American public and policy makers must understand is that physicians, nurses, medics, and other medical personnel who serve in the Armed Forces have an obligation to refuse to participate in torture, and to report such unethical and illegal behavior when they observe it or treat its victims. To date, to our knowledge, this has not happened.
