The Fairness Doctrine How We Lost it, and Why We Need it Back by Steve Rendall
The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows or editorials.

Big Radio Greed
The concentration of radio ownership has ushered in a new age of payola. Huge recording labels pay off radio conglomerates to play their most bankable performers. Commercial "talent" is pushed to the top of playlists nationwide, shoving local artists off the airwaves. When labels pay big radio to play their most mainstream acts, independent music suffers and radio choice turns into a mind-numbing race to the bottom.

Tell the CW Network not to do Business with Right-wing Propagandists
The company we are concerned about is Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair is the company that pre-empted Nightline's episode that read the names of those killed in Iraq, that planned an hour-long propaganda attack on John Kerry two weeks before the 2004 election, and that continues to air right-wing commentary with no ideological balance.

The Disinformation Society By Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
George Bush’s re-election has been explained as a red-state-versus-blue-state “values” gap. But research shows a majority of Bush voters were misinformed about White House policies on the environment, Iraq, and terrorism. Instead of news, they got propaganda disseminated by the right-wing machine, corporate broadcasters, and journalists who think balance is reporting one side.

Bill O'Reilly Exposed
O'Reilly uses his position as the centerpiece of Fox News' prime-time lineup to serially misinform his audiences, consistently skewing his presentation to advance conservative viewpoints (though he did admit on July 19, 2004, that Fox News "does tilt right"). As Media Matters has documented O'Reilly's tactics and false statements, he has derided the organization on numerous occasions, at one point describing Media Matters employees as "the most vile, despicable human beings in the country." Media Matters named O'Reilly as its 2004 Misinformer of the Year.

Fox Freudian slip: Asman asked Lott why a compromise was needed when "we" had the votes for the nuclear option
Responding to Sen. Trent Lott's (R-MS) suggestion that Senate Republicans had the necessary votes to invoke the so-called nuclear option and that such a step was necessary, Fox News anchor David Asman asked Lott why Republican senators had compromised on the issue. Why compromise, Asman asked, "if we should have done it and if we had the votes to do it." Asman clarified that it was "you guys in the Republican party" who had the votes.

Conservative Coup at CPB Brings Anti-Public-Interest-Oriented Ken Ferree to Agency’s Head
The ideologically driven majority on the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) now has the perfect apparatchik to run its zealous campaign to promote conservative/GOP-approved public broadcasting programming. Ken Ferree is now its “acting president.” That spells trouble for those who care about the fate of PBS and NPR--with a capital F.

A Culture of Death, Not Life By Frank Rich / New York Times
Mortality - the more graphic, the merrier - is the biggest thing going in America. Between Terri Schiavo and the pope, we've feasted on decomposing bodies for almost a solid month now. The carefully edited, three-year-old video loops of Ms. Schiavo may have been worthless as medical evidence but as necro-porn their ubiquity rivaled that of TV's top entertainment franchise, the all-forensics-all-the-time "CSI." To help us visualize the dying John Paul, another Fox star, Geraldo Rivera, brought on Dr. Michael Baden, the go-to cadaver expert from the JonBenet Ramsey, Chandra Levy and Laci Peterson mediathons, to contrast His Holiness's cortex with Ms. Schiavo's.

Media failed to identify conservative think tank that laundered DeLay travel money
News reports on recent revelations that gambling interests funded a lavish, expense-paid trip to Britain by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) and his wife by funneling the money through a tax-exempt organization, the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), have consistently failed to note that NCPPR is a conservative think tank.

Why is ABC News ignoring DeLay ethics story?
As of this post, ABC News is the only one of the three network news outlets not to have reported on recent revelations that House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) accepted lavish, all-expense-paid trips to South Korea and Britain, apparently in violation of House rules forbidding members from accepting travel expenses from registered lobbyists.

Fox News whitewashes another Republican front group
In a story on conservative efforts to win support for President Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security, Fox News chief Washington correspondent Jim Angle identified Progress for America (PFA), a conservative lobbying organization with strong Republican ties, as simply "an outside group." PFA, which has launched a $20 million campaign in support of Bush's Social Security plan, is regularly identified as "pro-Bush" or "conservative" on other news outlets. Fox has recently provided similar cover for another pro-privatization Republican front group, USA Next.

CBS Offers Misleading Pro-Privatization Predictions
CBS Evening News has presented two segments in recent weeks (2/9/05, 3/4/05) that purport to show how typical American workers would fare under George W. Bush's plan to privatize Social Security. But the segments rely on stock market projections that, if true, would make any "crisis" in Social Security almost impossible.

Olbermann revealed O'Reilly's "resume padding" in Super Bowl program essay
But Mr. O'Reilly has done a little spinning of his own here. Others might call it resume padding. The football office at Marist told me today that football was not a varsity sport there until 1978 -- seven years after O'Reilly graduated. When he played, it was a so-called club sport where players paid all their own expenses, and schedules and, most importantly, statistical record keeping were haphazard.

CBS, NBC refuse to air church's television advertisement
The CBS and NBC television networks are refusing to run a 30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ because its all-inclusive welcome has been deemed "too controversial."
The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.
